Beckham Charitable TrustMan has always been disturbed at the sight of suffering. Animals usually are blasé about the fate of their fellow beings. But man is not a beast. From the recorded time of Buddha, efforts have been continuous on improving the lot of the have-nots. These endeavors have been at various levels - socio-economic, political and religo-spiritual. David Beckham, too, is swayed by this sentiment. His celebrity status has brought him wealth and he wanted to make a good use of his immense riches. He set up a charitable trust - David Beckham Charitable Trust. The name of his wife Victoria, one of the popular Spice Girls, is associated with this Trust. David Robert Joseph Beckham, born in 1975, is a professional football player of England. He is not just a player but also an icon. Time magazine has voted him as one of Time 100. He is 'Britain's Greatest Ambassador' and known for his charitable zeal as well as leadership off the field. He had also been the highest paid player in the world. Beckham has supported many endeavors of UNICEF. Beckham is also a spokesperson for 'Malaria-No-More', a non-profit organization targeting the eradication of malaria in Africa. Beckham set up a Trust known as the Beckham Charitable Trust. In 2005, the trustees decided to lend their support to four other partners. All were based in UK but reaching out internationally with their charitable work - Advantage Africa, Kainos Community Project, Robin Hood Ministries (RHM) and Protimos Educational Trust. Advantage Africa teams up with inspired persons for community projects that aim to help those who are at the lowest level of succour - HIV/AID victims and other disabled persons. Kainos is concerned with prisons and prisoners aiming to improve their lot and tapping their potential. RHM tries to couple business with charity to be mutually beneficial. Protimos aims to protect pockets of Africa from bio-piracy and maintain biodiversity. Beckham and Victoria are totally busy with their charitable programs. They have set up a children's charity fund. Victoria has special plans for the orphans in Shanghai. The Beckhams have set up a small trust called Victoria and David Trust for meeting various needs for children - one being wheelchairs for the disabled. The couple avoids publicity of their charitable works - it being very personal. Victoria, recently, also visited slums in Lima in support of a BBC documentary on sports relief. |
